Diagnosis and treatment of diseases in the oral cavity is quite often hampered by the fact that this part of the human body is a subject of attention for two different branches of health care: medicine and dentistry. Therefore, there may be an overlap of both expertises in some areas but also a neglection of others. Such an area underdeveloped in the treatment of patients with diseases of the oral cavity is the adequate diagnostic application of knowledge of the gross and microscopical appearances shown by af fl ictions of the teeth and their surrounding structures. Pathologists with their medical training are, in general, not familiar with the basic anatomy and histology of these tissues and thus lack the background knowledge required for proper assessment of the pathologic alterations that may occur therein. Oral surgeons and dentists of course have a vast experience in diagnosis and treatment of dental and related diseases, but they, in general, do not have the laboratory facilities at their disposal needed for histopathology nor the microscopical skill of the experienced pathologist. Therefore, dental pathology is still largely an unknown fi eld, and quite often, gross and microscopic morphology of teeth anomalies are poorly or even incorrectly reported, partially because clinicians are poorly trained in recognising and accurately describing dental defects (including their radiological aspects) and partially because dentists are often unaware of the systemic aspects of the oral anomalies, with which they are associated. This book intends to fi ll this gap by offering practically applicable knowledge on macroscopic and histological changes that are seen in diseases of the dental and periodontal tissues, thus being helpful to provide an accurate description of gross and histological changes of the teeth and their associated pathology. The aim is to enable the pathologist to recognise and interpret alterations in teeth and periodontal tissues in such a way that the results from this investigation are useful for the clinician who has submitted the material. Moreover, the content of this book should enable the clinician to formulate speci fi c questions on histological features that may be present to provide the pathologist with a guideline how to examine the slides prepared from the tissue samples under investigation. In this way, the communication between clinician and pathologist will be facilitated, thus improving patient care.
