Oral and maxillofacial pathology is the specialty of dentistry and the discipline of pathology that addresses the nature, identi? cation, and management of diseases affecting the oral and maxillofacial regions. As such, it occupies a unique position in the health care commu-nity for both the dental and medical professions. Natu-rally, members of the dental profession (including general practitioners, specialists, and dental hygienists) must have a good knowledge of the pathogenesis, clini-cal features, treatment, and prognosis for oral and paraoral diseases. Likewise, such knowledge is impor-tant for those in the medical profession, especially for physicians who specialize in such areas as otolaryngol-ogy, dermatology, and pathology.
